Emotional Problems/Mood Disorders

Depression is characterized by symptoms "of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration” (World Health Organization, 2013). Depressive symptoms in adolescence have been associated with a range of poor outcomes including anxiety disorders, alcohol and nicotine dependence, poor academic performance, suicide attempt, unemployment, sexual risk behaviors, obesity, and major depression in young adulthood (Ramsawh, Chavira, & Stein, 2010; Woodward & Fergusson, 2001).
