Close Friendships

Positive peer friendships are characterized by the mutual experience of: support and encouragement; caring and validation; companionship; loyalty/standing up for one another; and trust. To date, our understanding of how positive peer friendships relate to youth outcomes is limited, however a recent pilot study on a nationally representative sample of adolescents found that they are negatively related to outcomes such as substance use, depression, getting in fights, and delinquency and positively related to good grades (Lippman et al., forthcoming).
