Diligence is defined as performing tasks with thoroughness and effort from start to finish where one can be counted on to follow through on commitments and responsibilities. Two related constructs are reliability and personal responsibility. A recent pilot study on a nationally representative sample of adolescents found that adolescents who exhibited diligence and reliability were less likely to get into fights, smoke, or report depressive symptoms and were more likely to earn good grades (Lippman et al. 2012).
